How does someone qualify for the Toledo Top 64? Who decides who makes the cut? What factors are considered?
These are the most common questions we receive every year.
We take the selection process extremely seriously. We understand the importance of fairness (i.e. not being biased towards high school or AAU programs) and we evaluate talent throughout the entire year.
In-person scouting by Shane Garcia is the foundation of our process. We attend as many high school games, AAU tournaments, and other exposure events all year around to see who should be considered and to hone our craft of scouting talent.
The criteria we use is below:
Criteria
- Location
- Prospect must be from Northwest Ohio. This spans as far east as Sandusky and as far south as Wapakoneta.
- College Offers and Interest
- Players with college offers are our top priority. These are definite invites.
- Players with college interest are also very likely to be invited.
- From there, we fill out the event by projecting which players are likely to gain offers or interest in the future. This is done, again, with in-person scouting and by collaborating with objective scouts around the state.
- State Ranking
- Prep Hoops Ohio Rankings help us make our selections. Shane Garcia is a scout for Prep Hoops Ohio while Anthony Garcia is an editor for the site. We trust the objectivity and work of the site and scout, Michael Roth, who is responsible for those rankings.
- Awards and Accolades
- The prospects who received All-State, District, All-NWO, All-Blade, and BCSN Top 30 teams are a good indicator of who should be considered for the event.
- Class
- We give seniors the top priority then the juniors so on and so forth.
- Seniors are the most recruited class every year. Colleges will be more likely to offer a senior after the event rather than any other class. Juniors and other classes are able to put their name on the radar at the Toledo Top 64. Plus, high-quality underclassmen ensure a more competitive environment for the event as a whole.
- We give seniors top priority because if we miss them, we can not make up for our mistakes the next year, unlike every other class.
Once we have our Top 64 list has been made we send it to some select scouts from across the state to see if there is anyone that we are missing.
We hope this answers any of your questions about our invite process.
